HALLIDAY, Cyril Robert

No.1882253, Sapper, Cyril Robert HALLIDAY
Aged 21

116 Road Construction Company, Royal Engineers
Killed in Action on 17th June 1940

Cyril Robert Halliday was born in Ashley in 1920, (Newmarket Q1-1920 3B:1012), son of Ernest A and Margaret E HALLIDAY (née STARLING ).

In the 1939 register his parents were at High Street, Ashley,( next door to the Finch family) father [7-10-1884] a gas works stoker; mother [18-8-1897] and brother Owen A [25-5-1915] oxyacet. burner/welder. There are two closed records

During this day, two weeks after the official end of evacuation from Dunkirk, the British had 1,750 killed according to CWGC. 29 were from Cyril's Company. The Luftwaffe bombed the Royal Engineers depot at Rennes, killing around 800, but this was also the day however that the SS Lancastria, trying to rescue more troops from St Nazaire, was bombed. She was supposedly grossly overladen and no figures have reliably placed on how many were aboard, hence the number of dead is not known. The confusion at the time means that dates and places of death must be viewed with some caution.
